Staples-Motley splits at state
CLASS 1A GIRLS' TENNIS
MINNEAPOLIS - The Staples-Motley Cardinals will play for the consolation championship after splitting two dual meets in the Class 1A state tournament Tuesday at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.

S-M, ranked third in 1A, lost 6-1 to defending champion Rochester Lourdes in the quarterfinals. The No. 3 doubles team of Kelly Hagenson-Annie Gillespie scored the Cardinals' only victory against fourth-ranked Lourdes.

"Rochester Lourdes is a very good team and they have a really good program that bounces back every year," Cardinal coach Kevin Coughlin said. "I think the girls did a great job of hanging close to them and (Lourdes was) just better today.

"Coming off the loss we did a great job of rebounding in the next match to beat a tough Benson team."

In the consolation semifinals the Cardinals recorded a 5-2 win over Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

Thanks to Abby Edin, Skye Coughlin, Andrea Koskiniemi and Mikayla Wing, the Cardinals swept the singles matches from Benson/K-M-S. S-M's team of Caitlin Robinson-Emma Koskiniemi won the No. 1 doubles match.
