Sex offender's move to Trommald to be discussed
A community notification meeting will be Thursday in Crosby concerning a Level 3 sex offender who intends to move to Trommald.

He currently is registered in Hennepin County.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Crosby City Hall. The sex offender, Michael James Norris, 37, plans to move to a residence on the 18000 block of Elk Street in Trommald. Norris is also known as Michael James Barfknecht. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs about 145 pounds, has a fair complexion and a small build with brown hair and eyes.

Representatives from the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department, Crosby Police Department and Minnesota Department of Corrections will conduct an informational meeting and will be available for discussion.

Norris was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and sentenced to 86 months in prison in 1997 in Hennepin County after he engaged in sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl whom he knew.

Michael Norris is a Level 3 sex offender.

Norris has served the sentence imposed on him by the court. Neither the sheriff's department nor the Department of Corrections can direct a sex offender on where to live, work or go to school.

The sheriff's department said the community notification meeting is not intended to increase fear in the community. The information is designed to enhance public safety and protection.

There are three levels of sex offender assignment that range from Level 1 offenders, who are considered a minor risk, up to Level 3, which means the person is the most likely to reoffend.
