'Quint-essential' gypsy-jazz event
Gypsy-jazz guitarist John Jorgenson leads a quintet of musicians who will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in Chalberg Theatre on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College.

The John Jorgenson Quintet features guitarist Jorgenson, a founding member of the Desert Rose Band, the Hellecasters and for six years a member of Elton John's band. Artists ranging from Barbara Streisand to Bonnie Raitt to Earl Scruggs have utilized Jorgenson's guitar work. Recently, Jorgenson was chosen to portray Django Reinhardt in the 2005 film "Head in the Clouds" with Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz.

Growing up in Southern California, Jorgenson was playing the piano and the clarinet by age 8. At 12, he got his first guitar and practiced voraciously while continuing to study classical music on woodwinds. By age 14, he was playing professionally.

Jorgenson came to national prominence in the mid-1980s with The Desert Rose Band, which he co-founded with Chris Hillman. The band earned five No. 1 singles and garnered several awards. During this time, he won the American Country Music's "Guitarist of the Year" award three consecutive times.

Following the Desert Rose Band, Jorgenson formed another award-winning group - the virtuosic guitar trio The Hellecasters. Originally conceived as a "one-off" gig for fun, the group went on to produce three acclaimed CDs and a live video, winning "Album of the Year" and "Country Album of the Year" from the readers of Guitar Player Magazine for the debut effort, "Return of the Hellecasters," released in 1993.

Jorgenson lives in Nashville and tours worldwide. He also performs in the United Kingdom with his electric band John Jorgenson and Friends and continues to collaborate with other artists live and in the studio.

The quintet includes Kevin Nolan, who for a decade had his own trio and has made a name on rhythm guitar; Jason Anick, a 2008 graduate of Hart College, on jazz violin; Simon Plant, a world-renowned bassist; and percussionist Rick Reed, who has performed with musicians such as Shelby Lynn and Ray Davies.
