Cardinals claim consolation championship CLASS 1A STATE TENNIS
MINNEAPOLIS - The Staples-Motley Cardinals won all four singles matches in straight sets, leading to a 5-2 victory over St. James in the Class 1A consolation championship meet Wednesday.
Abby Edin, Skye Coughlin, Andrea Koskiniemi and Mikayla Wing were all victorious in their singles matches, while the No. 1 doubles team of Caitlin Robinson-Emma Koskiniemi also won in straight sets.
"I thought the singles played their level of tennis that they're used to playing," said Cardinals head coach Kevin Coughlin. "(Tuesday), a couple of spots didn't play as well as they could have. Today, was a nice bounce back for everybody.
"Even the doubles, they all won that first set and it seemed like we were on a roll. The No. 1 doubles team beat a really good team."
The Cardinals, who fell to St. James in last year's third-place meet 4-3, secured the consolation championship for the first time since 2006.
S-M opened the tournament with a 6-1 loss to Rochester Lourdes Tuesday before defeating Benson-KMS in the consolation semifinals 5-2.
"We were disappointed in the defeat, but happy with the way we finished," said Kevin Coughlin. "When it comes right down to it, we are who we are. Rochester has a great program, but I wasn't sure about this year's team. If we could have played the way we did today yesterday who knows.
"We were just too inconsistent. You have to bring your 'A' game every time and ours wasn't quite there."
