2 Lake Hubert cabins burn
NISSWA - Fire destroyed two unoccupied cabins along the west side of Lake Hubert.

Firefighters from multiple departments responded to the fires, which were reported shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday at the lake off Camp Lincoln Road.

Nisswa Fire Chief Richard Geike said a fire started at one cabin that was under construction and leaped to another cabin. The fire also damaged a small garage.

Steady winds of 15 mph and wind gusts of up to 20 mph aided the fire's spread.

"It was a problem. The wind pushed the fire right into that other cabin," Geike said.

Aside from a smoldering construction Dumpster, some stacked lumber and scaffolding, little remained of the cabin under construction.

At the cabin next door, flames leaped out of the roof and smoke rolled from the windows throughout the cabin, causing extensive damage.

Smoke from the fire rolled across Lake Hubert, and the yards surrounding the two burned cabins were charred. In places, cut trees that had caught fire were piled up to be put out by a DNR firefighter. Trees still standing above the cabins also caught fire, and occasionally, chunks of burning wood crashed to the ground.

The cabin under construction was a complete loss. Geike said that by 5:40 p.m., firefighters were able to extinguish the fire at the other cabin.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known Tuesday night, Geike said. He said firefighters were told by a neighbor that no one was at the cabin under construction when the fire was reported. North Ambulance was called as a precaution, but Geike said no one was injured in the fire.

Neighboring fire department that assisted the Nisswa Fire Department came from Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, Mission Township, Ideal Township and the DNR. Firefighters from the several departments were able to stop the fire from spreading to several nearby cabins.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department and the Nisswa Police Department directed traffic past the long, narrow driveways that led to the burning cabins on Camp Lincoln Road.

It was the second time multiple neighboring cabins had been destroyed by fire in 2006. In April, on the east shore of Lake Hubert, two homes valued at $672,300 and $985,300, respectively, were destroyed by fire after one of the homeowner's outdoor grill was knocked over by strong winds. As was the case in Tuesday's fire, no one was injured in the April fire.
