Edgar F. Rehwaldt
Oct. 3, 1920 - Oct. 31, 2009

Edgar Frederick Rehwaldt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, was called to be with the Lord and reached his final resting place on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at McAllen Medical Center, in McAllen, Texas.

Edgar Rehwaldt

He was born on Oct. 3, 1920, in Kewanee, Ill. Edgar was baptized on Oct. 24, 1920, the eldest of six children of Albert and Agnes Rehwaldt. He was confirmed in 1934 at St. John's Lutheran Church of Good Thunder, Minn., and continued his education with graduation from Concordia College of St. Paul in 1940. Upon graduation from Concordia Seminary in early 1945, he married Frieda (Huse) in March 1945. Edgar was ordained and installed as a Lutheran pastor on April 29, 1945, in Rochfort Bridge, Alberta, Canada, and began his ministry, serving six small congregations. Edgar was devoted in his life of service as a parish pastor, serving at four additional parishes in Iowa (St. Paul Lutheran of Battle Creek, Midway, Iowa) and Minnesota (Zion of Fairmont, Fraser), Immanuel of Lakefield and Mount Calvary of Richfield, with special satisfaction in serving as pastor with a new mission church that grew to a full congregation, Trinity Lutheran, in four years in Anthon, Iowa. Edgar also served as vacancy pastor at eight additional churches during his ministry.

Following retirement in 1983, Edgar continued to be active as an interim pastor at Zion Lutheran in Brainerd, Minn., and as a missionary-at-large for "Winter Texans" in the McAllen-Mission Texas area for over 20 years, leading worship services at three locations including Pleasant Valley, where they had their winter home. Edgar was also instrumental in starting Mission of the Cross Lutheran Church of Cross Lake, Minn.

Edgar was highly respected and well loved by all that knew him. He was a generous man who served on many local community committees and organizations. He was on the board of directors of the National Lutheran Parent Teachers' League. He also served on the board of directors for the Minnesota South District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the 1960s and '70s and later served on the Board of Regents for Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., for 15 years, ending in 1989. He loved his work and enjoyed serving others and his savior throughout his life. Edgar also enjoyed traveling, fishing and sharing the good news.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frieda (Huse); one daughter: Carolyn (Shaver), of McAllen, Texas; three sons, Anthony, of St. Louis, Mo., Sidney, of Richfield, Minn., and Jonathan, of Burnsville, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Erik, Christopher, Kelly (Hecksel), Corey, Stacy, Jacob and Joshua; two great-grandchildren, Cadison and Brayden (Hecksel); two sisters, Dorothy (Williams) and Irma (Rehbein); and two brothers, Charles and Harold. His parents and a sister, Arlene (Prigge), preceded him in death.

Services celebrating his life will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at his beloved Mission of the Cross Lutheran Church, Crosslake, Minn., with Pastor John Grein and Pastor Leslie Uhrinak officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 4-6:30 p.m. at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be following the service in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Brainerd, Minn. Arrangements are with Halverson-Johnson Funeral Home.

Memorial donations should be directed to the Lutheran Heritage Foundation.

Edgar's devotion and service will be missed greatly. "There comes a time when time is no more. The eternity begins. Let the tears cease, for the joy has begun. To be with the Lord is far, far, better." Pastor Edgar Rehwaldt: Oct. 3, 1920 - Oct. 31, 2009.
