Virginia denies PR-B shot at state SECTION HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
GRAND RAPIDS - Naomi Anderson had 25 kills, five blocks, two digs, two ace serves and two set assists for Pine River-Backus as the Tigers fell to the Virginia Blue Devils 3-1 in the Section 7-2A volleyball championship game Saturday.
After losing 25-15 in game one, the Tigers clawed back, pushing Virginia to the limit in each game. The Blue Devils won the second game 27-25 before dropping the third 25-21.
Virginia wrapped up the section championship with a 26-24 win in the fourth game.
The Tigers had to overcome two sprained ankles, creating chaos for PR-B coach Alisa Den-Hartog.
"Taylor (Sheley) sprained her ankle in practice and Krystle Hamilton sprained her ankle in warm-ups before the game," Den-Hartog said. "That made things kind of crazy. It threw a wrench into things."
Caitlin Stackpool led the Blue Devils with 46 assists, 29 digs and two ace serves. Erin Jacobsen added 15 kills and five blocks. Brittany Oakman and Megan Kelly had 17 digs each.
Brianna Erickson dished out 41 set assists for the Tigers while collecting four digs, four kills and one ace serve. Laura Laposky had 15 digs and Ashlee Perkins tallied 10 digs, seven kills and two ace serves.
"Our girls played really well after the first game," Den-Hartog said. "Virginia is a good team that came to play and came to win."
