Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, RREAL partner up

The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, in partnership with the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance, was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency in order to install eight solar heating systems on homes of low-income residents on the reservation. Four systems were installed on the homes of low-income families and four on homes owned by the Leech Lake Tribal Housing Authority.

The housing authority provides housing to low-income families not able to purchase their own home. The installation of RREAL's solar-powered furnace will reduce heating costs, free up more money for the families and allow them to more quickly purchase their home.

Other goals of the pilot project include studying the effectiveness of the systems and reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions on the reservation to preparing a workforce for the green jobs industry and creating green jobs on the Leech Lake Reservation.

To learn more about this project or RREAL's work, go to its Web site at www.rreal.org or call (218) 587-4753.
