LAKE MILLE LACS
East - There hasn't been many anglers out and those who have are finding a tough walleye bite. A few are being taken at night on crankbaits along the shallow rocks and shoreline breaks. An occasional muskie is pulled from the shallows on large minnows, but not with any consistency. Hunting reports have been minimal with a few ducks and grouse being taken.
West - Angling pressure is minimal with a few boats fishing for walleyes at night with crankbaits when the weather allows. Look to the points and shoreline breaks after sunset. Muskie and northern pike action also has been limited over the past week.
LEECH LAKE AREA
Perch continue to be caught on the flats and points in eight to 12 feet on a jig and minnow. The same presentation will produce walleyes on the shoreline breaks and points in 10 to 12 feet. Look to Sucker Bay and Shingobee Bay for suspended crappies. Grouse hunting continues to be much better than duck hunting and archery hunters have noticed more bucks on the move this week.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
It's been tough to get a report due to the lack of anglers on the lake. This between-the-seasons time might be best spent on the points and shoreline breaks with a jig and minnow if you're looking for walleyes and perch. Some divers are showing up on the main lake and river areas, while grouse hunters continue to do well in the big woods.
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
There isn't a lot of fishing activity, but Gull Lake and North Long Lake are producing walleyes in 20 to 38 feet of water. Jigs tipped with minnows are the ticket when worked slowly. Bass and northern pike also remain active on most lakes with some of the bigger fish also being taken on minnows by walleye anglers. Panfish reports have been non-existent.
CROSBY AREA
A few walleye anglers continue to hook fish on minnows in 20 to 24 feet on Serpent Lake and Rabbit Lake. Panfish, bass, and northern pike reports have been non-existent. Bow hunters are noting that the bucks are on the move and grouse action remains good. Duck hunters are seeing some divers, but not huge concentrations.
CROSS LAKE AREA
The Whitefish Chain has cooled off and possibly turned over. Anglers should still find walleyes trolling crankbaits or jigging with redtails. Northern pike anglers are catching fish using spinnerbaits along the weeds. Small game hunters are reporting better success now that the foliage is down. Duck hunters also are seeing more birds.
