Brainerd area ranch has entry in World Show
Sunup Ranch, a quarter horse and Angus cattle ranch near Brainerd, will be taking one of its horses to the American Quarter Horse Association's World Show.
The World Show, which occurs annually in Oklahoma City, is considered the breed association's most important competition.
Sunup's Misty Star, an 11-year-old mare born on the ranch, will be shown Nov. 17 in senior dally team roping - heading. The mare is owned by Greg Booth and Vickie Kettlewell and was bred by Barbara Kettlewell, founder of Sunup Ranch.
The horse is currently in training with Mark Wray in Ord, Neb. She earned an AQHA Superior award in roping this year.
The 2009 AQHA World Show, which began Nov. 6 and runs for 16 days, has 2,102 horses slated to compete. Horses must qualify for the competition by earning points in AQHA shows throughout the year. Owners compete for awards and $2,769,114 in prize money. Entries were received from 46 states, six Canadian provinces, Brazil, France, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Sunup Ranch is seven miles west of Brainerd on Pine Beach Drive. The ranch's customers are across the globe. In 2005, Sunup Ranch received the American Quarter Horse Association Legacy award, an award for ranches that have continuously registered quarter horses for 50 years, putting the ranch in elite company. In 2005, 15 ranches reached the milestone worldwide.
