Business notes CLC counselor heads state association
CAREER
Sarah Rach-Sovich, a counselor at Central Lakes College was named president-elect of the Association of Minnesota Community and Technical College Counselors.
Rach-Sovich has been at CLC since the start of the fall semester, accepting a one-year assignment while counselor Rick Kangas is on an administrative reassignment as college registrar.
She came to CLC from Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Fergus Falls, where she had been a counselor for nearly three years.
Rach-Sovich earned her associate's degree from Fergus Falls Community College, with an emphasis in accounting and business. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology at St. Cloud State University.
She was a counseling intern at Neighborhood Counseling Center, Wadena, and has also been a behavior therapist intern at the Wadena Day Treatment Center.
Board members join Riverwood Foundation
AITKIN - Mark Meyer and Terry Butenhoff were elected to Riverwood Foundation's Board of Directors, Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin.
Butenhoff is owner of State Farm Insurance agency in Aitkin.
Meyer, a lifelong Aitkin resident, graduated from the University of St. Thomas and has been a financial adviser for the last 11 years. He currently works at MJM Financial part of the Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network.
Atkinson November LF Employee of Month
LITTLE FALLS - Russell Atkinson, Little Falls, associate with Coborn's Ace Hardware for four years, was named the November Employee of the Month by the Little Falls Chamber of Commerce.
Atkinson's supervisor Dave Glaze described him as "a dedicated employee" who is "always friendly and courteous when waiting on customers and will go out of his way to help. I never have to ask Russell to do what's in his job description. He'll do it plus many other job duties."
Store manager Daniel Walter said Atkinson strives each and every day to do his best with exceptional customer service. Walter described Atkinson as dependable and reliable.
Walter said in a news release that Atkinson "is a great example to other employees and would do an excellent job of representing the best of what the community has to offer our patrons."
Nordecor gains FSC certification
Nordecor LLC, a custom millwork company in Brainerd, announced it has been granted Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody Certification.
This certification means that Nordecor meets the strict tracking requirements prescribed by the FSC to ensure the products Nordecor sells as FSC-Certified are produced from wood originating from responsibly managed forests, or from recycled lumber, such as barn wood.
Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. To become FSC certified a business must meet a set of strict standards whereby wood is tracked all the way from harvest to final product. Buying from companies that display the FSC "check-tree" logo is a guarantee the products are responsibly sourced.
Nordecor provides high quality interior and exterior wood products for commercial and residential use, specializing in the use of rustic woods and lumber reclaimed from old barns and industrial buildings throughout North America.
Lake and Home Magazine expands coverage
Lake and Home Magazine announced it has expanded its coverage to the Brainerd lakes area.
The magazine features homes and articles and columnists covering issues that range from new building concepts to lakeshore challenges to gardening tips.
Two area business women, Linda Gettelman and Cindy Buxton, are working as independent advertising consultants.
Anderson-Krahn joins Lakeland Vet Hospital
Molly Anderson-Krahn, veterinarian, joined Lakeland Veterinary Hospital in July.
She received her biology degree from Winona State University and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota. Anderson-Krahn was born in Brainerd and raised in Rochester.
Headlee gains recognition
Through a partnership of the Clean Energy Resource Team - CERT and the Central Minnesota Alternative Energy Regional Collaborative, a collaborative administered by the Region Five Development Commission, Angela Headlee was named the "Central CERT-CMAERC Organizer."
Headlee will provide coordination of various groups and individuals to identify and implement established and newly generated regional community-scale energy efficiency and clean energy projects.
She has completed the Dunwoody Energy Audit training, has experience and interest in regional and community-scale energy efficacies.

CenterPoint Energy ranked among the top Midwest Region utilities in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Residential Gas Utility Customer Satisfaction Study.
CenterPoint Energy has ranked among the top Midwest Region utilities for seven of the past eight years the study has been conducted.
Winter attends Celebrating Home Rally
Amee Winter, Brainerd resident and designer for Celebrating Home, a direct selling home decor company headquartered in Marshall, Texas, recently returned from the company's rally 2009 conference in August at the Gaylor Opryland Resort in Nashville.
Kersting joins Lakewood Bank
Darlene Kersting joined Lakewood Bank in Baxter as a residential loan originator.
Kersting graduated from Bemidji State University with honors majoring in accounting and minoring in business. She was owner of Budget Mortgage since the 1990s and she has more than 15 years residential lending experience. She is a licensed certified public accountant.

Manufacturers, students attend appreciation event
STAPLES - Region Five Development Commission hosted a manufacturers appreciation luncheon on Oct. 29 to honor and recognize the contributions of area businesses in the manufacturing sector during Minnesota Manufacturing Week.
Attending the gathering at Central Lakes College, Staples Campus, were more than 80 businesses, students and partners. Partners in the event were the area chambers of commerce from Brainerd, Long Prairie, Morrison County, Staples and Wadena. Other partners involved were Minnesota Power, the Minnesota Small Business Development Center, Todd-Wadena Electric, Central Lakes College, M-State, as well as the Brainerd and Wadena WorkForce Centers. Bill Blazar, senior vice-president of public affairs and business development, from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce was the keynote speaker. Region Five thanked Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, and Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen, R-Alexandria, for their participation and support.
Following the event, tours were given of the CLC trade classrooms and of Stern Manufacturing and Stan Widmer & Associates.
Lakewood Health System to host diabetes talk
STAPLES - An educational event titled HealthBEAT For Her: The Dilemma of Diabetes is planned 5 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Main Campus classrooms at Lakewood Health System in Staples.
Discussion will include preventative measures, warning signs and risks associated with family history, age and related diagnoses. This event will be led by Laurie Bach, registered nurse and Kelly Coughlin, licensed and registered dietitian from Lakewood Health System. Bach and Coughlin are part of the Diabetes Resource Center as certified diabetes educators. During the program, interactive learning sessions will include Thera-Band exercise instruction and a healthy holiday food sampling.

WORKSHOP
'Serving It Safe' at CLC is Nov. 24
A Serving It Safe review course is planned from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 24 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.
This course provides four hours of continuing education for certified food managers. It will address food sanitation and safety, emerging trends in food preparation and handling sanitation and prevention of food-borne illness.
Colette Pohlkamp is the instructor. Tuition is $70.

The Crow Wing Power Community Trust Board donated $51,000 to area community programs during its fourth quarter meeting in October.

Operation Round-Up is funded by participating members of Crow Wing Power who allow the cooperative to round up their electric bills to the nearest whole dollar. The additional change is pooled and distributed quarterly. Since the program's inception in late 1996, Round-Up has donated more than $1,727,000 to community projects and programs in Cass, Crow Wing and Morrison counties.
The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for Jan. 28. Grant forms may be obtained by calling Crow Wing Power at 829-2827 or (800) 648-9401 or online at www.cwpower.com. The deadline for grant applications is Jan. 10.
GiveMN assists in tracking donations
Minnesotans lead the nation in charitable giving.
Individuals in Minnesota gave more than $4 billion to charity last year, Confidence Learning Center recently reported. GiveMN.org - a Web site for nonprofits in Minnesota - is working to change the way Minnesotans experience giving and help create a stronger nonprofit community for Minnesota.
GiveMN allows donors to find and support organizations that match their philanthropic goals and easily keep track of their donations in a single online location. GiveMN is the first giving-site focused specifically on nonprofits in a single state, but donors can also access all registered United States 501 (c3) organizations.
Give to the Max Day on Nov. 17 is designed to showcase online giving.
Lakewood Health System employees raise funds
STAPLES - On Oct. 29, Lakewood Health System hosted a special event called United for Pink.
Employees were asked to wear pink and donate $5 toward the purchase of care package items for breast health patients at Lakewood. In addition, women's health providers gave their patients pink Mardi Gras beads all month long, signifying the completion of annual well-woman exams and mammograms. The beads will be handed out to women in the following months, until supplies last.

Time Communications earns award
Time Communications, with offices in Brainerd, was awarded the 2009 Award of Excellence for the fourth consecutive year.
The award was presented by the Canadian Call Management Association, the industry's trade association for providers of call center services. Time Communications was presented with the award at the annual convention and trade show in British Columbia with a top 10 placement.
A four-time award winner, Time Communications earned the Silver Plus Award for four consecutive years.
