Principals left to await closure decisions
Lincoln Elementary School Principal Jeff DeVaney, a Brainerd School District employee for 33 years, said he feels a deep disappointment because the operating levy referendum failed.

"I cannot believe that many people voted no, knowing what it would mean," DeVaney said. "But they have spoken and now we need to regroup and decide where to go from here.

"I feel disappointment for the kids, the staff and the community. This vote will have ripple effects into our community."

Lincoln school is one of the three schools on the chopping block that could be closed as part of the budget cuts.

If the school closes, DeVaney said students will have to go to other schools, they'll lose friendships and there will be huge transportation costs.

"The buildings won't feel the hurt, but there will be lots of hurt felt," DeVaney said. "We've worked hard at Lincoln and have built a community of parents here. If the school closes, the kids will filter into other buildings, and the strong feeling won't be there. What it comes down to is the people."

Harrison and Whittier elementary schools also could be closed. Steve Lundberg, principal at both schools, said the school board will decide what schools to close.

"The referendum was put out to the voters with the best information and we have to accept the vote and the direction that will be chosen," Lundberg said. "I have to do my part wherever I will be and give kids the best education possible."

Lundberg, who has a son in the school district, said as a parent, he's concerned about how many opportunities will be available for his child.

"We have to be there for the kids and do our best," Lundberg said.
