Wadena-Deer Creek headed back to state SECTION 8-2A VOLLEYBALL
HAWLEY - Kelsi Crawford hammered 23 kills and nine digs as the South Subsection champion Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines advanced to there second consecutive state tournament with a 3-1 win over North Subsection champion Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the Section 8-2A finals Saturday.
"We came out and played probably two of our best games all year," Wolverine coach Sue Volkmann said. "The third game we kind of got caught on our heels and the fourth games we had some lineup problems. You have to give credit to the kids for stepping up. We were behind by five points and made a run at the end and come out on top."
Brittney Noon collected 21 kills and Courtney Volkmann tallied 46 set assists and 13 digs for the Wolverines, who will look to improve on their one-and-done state appearance last season.
"Last year I think we kind of had that 'just glad to be here' feeling," Volkmann said. "This time we are going down there knowing what to expect and wanting to do more than just show up. We are a little more focused and a little more prepared and we want to go down there and get a win."
W-DC will play top-seeded Marshall in the quarterfinal 5 p.m. Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.
"It is huge for the program to get to a second state tournament in a row," Volkmann said. "The more success you have, the more interest you receive and the more kids you get working to get to that level and you keep building the program off of that. We are going to go down there and give a good representation of ourselves and build off of last year."
