Drivers get a taste of what's to come
Freezing temperatures and at least a dusting of snow helped make for slippery road conditions Friday morning.

Sgt. Dave Larson, Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department, said he was concerned about road conditions when he went on duty at 7 a.m. and temperatures were at the freezing point, but the county did not respond to calls of vehicles in the ditch. The county did have reports that conditions were particularly slippery south of Brainerd.

The Crow Wing County Highway Department had trucks out sanding Friday morning for the first time this season.

Highway Engineer Lyndon Robjent said snow was heavier to the northern part of the county with about an inch on the ground with a half inch of snow in Brainerd and points south. But with the pavement still relatively warm as fall gives way to winter, the snow and ice melt quickly, Robjent said.

The Brainerd Police Department reported a two-car crash without injuries Friday morning at Eighth Avenue Northeast. In Baxter, two vehicles left the road within minutes of each other about 7 a.m. on the same stretch of Highway 210 near the Crow Wing County line. The crashes were attributed to the slippery road conditions, the Baxter Police Department reported.

Two Iowa men die in crash

Two Des Moines, Iowa, men died as a result of a single-vehicle accident that was discovered at 2:25 a.m. Friday on Cass County Road 26, south of Cass County Road 2 in Walden Township west of Pine River, the Cass County Sheriff's Department.

The names of the victims have not been released. They are age 45 and 28.

Cass County officials report a 2005 Dodge Ram left the roadway and rolled multiple times.

The crash is under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff's Department and the State Patrol.

Tabitha Hansen, 35, was injured when the vehicle she was driving left the road and rolled over on that stretch. The Brainerd Fire Department assisted at the scene but did not have to use extrication tools. Hansen was treated at St. Joseph's Medical Center and released.

A second vehicle went into the ditch about 500 yards to the west of the first crash. No one was injured in that accident.

An accident on Highway 6 in Emily was reported about 5:30 a.m. in a single vehicle rollover. Another crash was reported at 7:16 a.m. on County Road 25 and Highway 210.

Snow was in the forecast Saturday and rain was turning to sleet about 8 a.m. but warmer temperatures of 50 degrees were anticipated for Sunday. That could be the highest temperature of the week and perhaps the last good day for last minute yard work as temperatures are not expected to get out of the 40s. The National Weather Service forecasts Friday to be sunny but chilly with a high of 34 degrees.
