Condition of shooting victim improves
The condition of Nathaniel Fitch, the 13-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head at a friend's house Oct. 29, is improving.

The Forestview Middle School eighth-grader was in fair condition Thursday at St. Cloud Hospital, an improvement from four days ago when he was listed in serious condition and from last week when he was reported in critical condition.

Fitch was at the home of two friends on Oak Street when a handgun he was playing with went off. The boys knew the gun was loaded but thought it was safe, police said.

Investigators are still trying to determine where Fitch and the other boys got the handgun, Brainerd Police Chief John Bolduc said Thursday. It is believed the boys had been in possession of the handgun for some time.

"We have some ideas but haven't been able to verify them," Bolduc said.

An account has been set up at Bremer Bank for the benefit of Fitch.
