Property owners along Forest Road appeal
its road designation
Senior Reporter Property owners along the Miller Lake County Forest Road appealed its designation as a forest road before the Crow Wing County Board Thursday.
Kathleen and Scott Stenberg were represented by attorney Angela Christenson before the board. The Stenbergs said the forest road designation creates unwanted vehicle, and potentially off-highway vehicle traffic for a proposed ATV trail using the forest road, across their property when alternative routes exist. The Stenbergs fenced and gated the route after they purchased the property in 2005.
Tom Cowell, land commissioner, said the use of the trail by the land department stretches back to the 1950s and aerial photos as far back as 1939 show the forest road. The property was avoided after the owners put up the gates, Cowell said, but the route provides a desired shorter distance for loggers.
The board tabled action until Nov. 25, suggesting Cowell may want to talk to the Stenbergs about a land exchange.
In other business, the board:
Accepted the resignation letter of outgoing Commissioner Dewey Tautges, who is retiring effective Jan. 5. "The associations I have made during my eight years in public office have truly been memorable for me and I have enjoyed it immensely," Tautges stated.
Learned the discount prescription drug program, a partnership between the National Association of Counties, Crow Wing County and Caremark, has been ongoing for seven months and now serves 104 people. Susan Beck, human services director, said savings for residents since the program began have totaled $9,133. The program, available to any county resident, comes at no cost to the county, taxpayers or the people who use the program.
Beck said the discount drug program is used by people who are uninsured or underinsured and who are not covered by public programs or with private insurance for the prescription.
Agreed to talk about the Thirty Lakes Watershed District's two management districts at its Committee of the Whole meeting on Nov. 18. The board voted 3-2 against advertising to fill the vacancies, with Commissioners Paul Thiede and Doug Houge opposed. Thiede said the county has a statutory obligation to publish but he was not against putting it off.
