It's Minnesota D-Day - Don't Smoke Day - a day off for tired lungs. Or some, anyway. Thousands of Minnesotans will attempt to get through the day without cigarettes in an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society and American Lung Association.

Brainerd bus customers may some day be able to eliminate waiting at a cold bus stop if a dial-a-ride system, which was discussed by the Brainerd Bus Committee, is established. The committee moved to investigate a similar program operating in Virginia.
40 years ago (1969)
October employment was 501 higher in Brainerd this year than last, according to the Minnesota Employment Service. The biggest rise was in government with a jump of 316, followed by manufacturing with a gain of 273.
60 years ago (1949)
The statewide shortage of 1950 automobile and truck license plates has been felt in Crow Wing County the past several days. Ken Sunberg, deputy registrar, said 5,100 plates were issued before supplies ran out. Extra plates will be mailed direct.
80 years ago (1929)
The home of the new Publix Corp. theater in Brainerd has been definitely agreed upon as The Paramount, said George Irwin, manager. Some 5,000 lights will blazon the entrance on Front Street, and all air will be washed through city spring water.
100 years ago (1909)
A bouncing baby boy has increased the membership of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Slipp. The newest arrival weighs eight pounds, has a good set of lungs and, on Frank's word, the boy very much resembles his good looking father.
