Warriors diver Etterman qualifies for state SECTION 8-2A SWIMMING AND DIVING Sports Editor Katy Etterman qualified for state and Laura Goll broke a school record as the Brainerd Warriors finished fourth in the Section 8-2A swimming and diving meet Saturday at St. Cloud Tech High School.
Etterman, who placed 27th at state last year, placed third in the section with 361.10 points.
"Katy is a talented diver, she dove well," Warriors coach Dan Anderson said. "I think she knows she can dive a little better, but 361 is a very good score.
"She was steady. I know she probably feels like she could have stuck each dive a little bit better. In a meet with 11 dives the cream rises to the top.
"With three dives to go I believe she was in fourth place, and the top four go to state. She worked her way up to third with her final three dives. We all knew she would make it to state, barring a disaster."
Goll went a 5:28.38 to set the school record in the 500 free and finish fifth in the event. She eclipsed the previous Brainerd mark of 5:32.24 set by Erica Campbell in 2001.
"That was a big deal," Anderson said. "We're excited about that. That was Laura's goal."
Brainerd amassed 276.50 points, finishing behind Maple Grove (602), Buffalo (339) and Elk River (299).
"As a team we swam well," Anderson said. "It's really tough to make it to state right now the way our section is set up and the time standards are so fast. They didn't adjust the time standards back to the old suits.
"It's very tough to make time standards now. Maybe they will adjust them next year. I think if you qualified by time standard this year you're probably looking at placing in the state meet."
It was the first time since 1998 that the Warriors have had one individual state qualifier and no relays.
"We had a good season," Anderson said. "We were 9-1 and runner-up in the conference We have a really nice team with a lot of depth, but in a meet like this it's just a different kind of meet.
"We swam very well, every girl dropped time, and I couldn't be happier. We pretty much expected fourth and that's what we got.
"I'm proud of the way we swam. You can't always win the section, you can't always take the top two spots, and there have been years we've done that. It was one of those years where that just didn't happen, but I don't fault the girls in any way. They really swam well."
