A New Prague man being held in the Crow Wing County jail was found dead early Monday in his jail cell.
Kyle Jason Peterson, 42, New Prague, was found unresponsive by jail staffers about 2:20 a.m. Monday. Though the cause of his death is pending an autopsy, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department reported it appeared to be a suicide.
Capt. Jerry Negen, jail administrator, declined Monday afternoon to say how it was believed Peterson died because the incident was still being investigated.
Peterson was in the general population, Negen said, and not under any special watches. He said Peterson was found unresponsive during staffers' regular rounds, which are conducted every 30 minutes.
"It's been tough on the staff," Negen said. "These (inmates) are human beings, these are people. Our staff did their jobs right but this was just a unfortunate situation."
Peterson had been in the jail since Oct. 6 for violating the conditions of probation on a 2005 conviction for serious felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct, for which he had been sentenced to 180 days jail and 15 years supervised probation.
Peterson was due to attend a probation violation hearing on Wednesday.
