Richard F. Skumavc
NISSWA - Richard F. Skumavc, 83, of Gladstone Lake near Nisswa, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, Minn. A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd with Father George Zeck officiating.
Richard was born May 3, 1926, in Brainerd. He attended St. Francis School and after graduation furthered his studies at Nazareth Hall and the St. Paul Seminary. Richard began his career as a radio announcer for KLIZ in Brainerd. In 1949, Richard was called to serve his country in the United States Army. For most of his military career, Richard was an instructor at various bases. He also spent nine months in the South Pacific on the island of Eniewtok where they performed atomic tests. Following his honorable discharge, Richard returned to broadcasting in Williston, N.D., Virginia, Minn., and Duluth, Minn. In 1959 he became the broadcast editorialist for the Wisconsin Farmers Union in Chippewa Falls, Wis. In 1995, he returned to Brainerd to be near his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Paul) Bergerson; son, Richard (Kori Rae) Skumavc; granddaughter, Noelle Ann Bergerson; grandson, Tanner Michael Bergerson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Francis; brother, Father Mike Skumavc; and a son, Michael Charles Skumavc.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
