BACKUS - Cass County Administrator Robert Yochum reported Tuesday the county has committed to pay contractors all but $2,000 of the nearly $1.9 million the state will provide for Ah-Gwah-Ching abatement, demolition and new sewer and water line connections to the city of Walker.
The city of Walker and Cass County do not have additional funds to dedicate toward this project, he said.
The county board voted Tuesday to stipulate that utility contractors Young Excavating of Hackensack, which will install sewer and water lines, and Maguire Iron of Sioux Falls, S.D., which will install a new water tower, must reduce the scope of their contracts to an extent that will leave $33,400 more in a contingency fund.
Young will lower a fence from 8 to 6 feet and will remove two equalization pipes from the water main, he said.
Chief Financial Officer Larry Wolfe said it is his understanding this will mean longer spaces between sections where water can be shifted between two parallel pipes to keep continuous water flow during any future breakdown in the primary water line. He told the board he does not believe this will affect the overall line operation. In response to board concerns, Yochum said he will consult the project engineers before giving final approval.
