After an October drenched in rain, November has shaped up to be a nice change of pace.
Unseasonably so, actually.
The average temperature for the entire month of November is 37 degrees. So far, according to statistics kept by the National Weather Service in Duluth, on only one day, Nov. 5, did the high temperature fail to reach at least 40 degrees.
Fourteen out of 18 days in November saw a high temperature eclipse 45 degrees, and on seven of those days the temperature topped 50 degrees, including on Wednesday.
For the entire month, temperatures started out cool before raising to 10 to 13 degrees above normal between Nov. 6-13, said Ed Flenz, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth.
Flenz said the high November temperatures were not unusual.
The sun set Wednesday in Baxter on a day in which the high temperature in Brainerd hit 51 degrees, about 15 degrees above normal temperatures for this time in November. Temperatures throughout the month have been above normal, and that trend is expected to continue into this weekend. Does that mean a balmy Thanksgiving is in our future? "For the month, you're 8 degrees above normal but I don't think that's too wide a discrepancy," Flenz said. "You're going to have warm periods and cold periods. This is not near a record or anything like that."
The records were eight years ago, when on Nov. 16, 2001, the temp hit 65 degrees; on Nov. 17, 2001, the temp hit 62 degrees and on Nov. 18, 2001, the temp hit 67 degrees.
Temperatures will remain well above normal through the weekend, with highs of 43 to 48 degrees on Thursday and 45-50 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Above average temperatures may be a theme this winter.
The National Weather Service is calling for warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the country because of an El Nino system in the tropical Pacific Ocean.
