FINE ARTS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Jared Anderson

Year: Senior.

Age: 18.

Art focus: Fifth Street Journal.

Adviser nomination: The Fifth Street Journal adviser said, "Jared brings a solid foundation to the Fifth Street Journal. As co-editor-in-chief, he leads through example and dedication. As a writer, he stands out as one of my best in recent years."

How does your writing stand out? "I've always liked to write. I write things with a purpose to catch people's interest. I'm writing an editorial right now and I'm using humor in it to draw people's interest. The editorial is on the music at our school dances. The music is normally pretty bad."

How do you lead the class? "I always like to put my name on something that I put effort into and something that I'd be proud of. I'll stay late or help work on someone else's page. We all work together and everyone does their part."

What do you enjoy about writing? "Writing is a good way to get your point across, a way of communication. Writing allows you to think about your words, to make it precise so you can get your words across the way you want them to be interpreted."

Most memorable fine arts achievement: "Placing in the Brainerd School District's writing contest two years in a row. I wrote a short story my sophomore year about the media and how it sells sex, and my junior year I wrote a poem that was about speaking the truth even if it's not nice to hear."

Artists most admired: Songwriter John Reuben and writer Ted Dekker.

Best written story of all-time: "World magazine did an editorial piece on the election that was well-written."

Newspapers you read often: "The Dispatch, and I like the sports section of the (Minneapolis Star-) Tribune when I get it."

Most memorable game you've seen: "The Super Bowl last year, when the Giants made that touchdown pass at the end of the game for the win."

Favorite movie: "Facing the Giants."

Favorite TV programs: "The Winning Edge" and NFL football.

CD playing in your vehicle: "It's a mix of rock and a little rap."

Parents: Dan and Kathy Anderson of Baxter.

Honorable mention:

Alice Widmark, sophomore, orchestra: The orchestra director said, "Alice is in her second year of Chamber Orchestra and is showing leadership and extra efforts."
