Etterman qualifies for finals
Class 2A diving
Katy Etterman's goal was to qualify for Saturday's finals in the Class 2A state diving meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Mission accomplished.

Following five dives in Thursday night's prelims the Brainerd High school junior was sitting in 10th place. She moved up two spots after the semifinals and ended the night with 253.85 points. Etterman is 3.95 points out of seventh place, 4.5 away from sixth.

Warriors diving coach Mary Streiff believes Etterman will finish higher than eighth.

"She has a strong finals left," Streiff said. "We anticipate her being able to hang onto that, or climb higher. She's got some great dives left. We're excited about that."

Now that she's in the finals Etterman also hopes to move up Saturday night.

"It would be nice to get even higher," she said. "Everyone's pretty close to one another. I have a couple of good dives left that could move me up."

Streiff said, true to form, Etterman was steady throughout Thursday's meet except for one dive.

"She missed her second dive," Streiff said. "I think it was a little nerves, but she got focused and did really well.

"She stayed in a zone. She walked by me every time (after every dive), and I didn't make eye contact with her. I didn't want to take her out of the little rituals that she likes."

Etterman said she was a "little bummed after my second dive."

"Otherwise, everything else went about as well as I could have planned, besides my reverse one and a half, but I was happy with it," she added.

She finished 27th last year and attributes her higher place this year to attending a diving camp at the university in June.

"It's not as much from being here last year but doing that camp just made me confident with the board," Etterman said.
