Business notes Polipnick, Hallan, Ellingson join the Brainerd Dispatch
CAREER
Richard Polipnick, Mitchell Hallan and Laura Ellingson recently joined the Brainerd Dispatch.
Polipnick, a Baxter resident, was named the assistant advertising director at the Dispatch.
He spent four years as the senior Internet marketing consultant for ChamberMaster, a member management software company for chambers of commerce. During those four plus years, Polipnick worked with businesses of all sizes and from all industries to assist them with marketing their business online. His background includes sales, customer service, management, and training.
Hallan joined the Dispatch as the recruitment coordinator. He is overseeing the transformation toward multimedia advertising, establishing contracts with area companies and devising recruitment-advertising campaigns.
Hallan is a 2009 graduate from St. John's University, with degrees in management/political science/entrepreneurship. He is a Society for Advancement of Management National Champion, former president/treasurer of the Students in Free Enterprise and St. John's Alpine ski/board team. He worked as a strategic consultant in Shanghai China with ITI Manufacturing and in Hong Kong with Wynn Resorts. Locally he has supervisory and internship experience with Grand View Lodge. He is working on his Emergency Medical Technician certification through courses with the National Ski Patrol.
Ellingson, Brainerd, is the Dispatch's newest advertising assistant. She works closely with Up North Auto's and real estate. She was in the automotive field for 19 years.
Whistler joins Beltone Hearing Center
Jim Whistler joined Beltone Hearing Center of St. Cloud and will be representing the company in the Brainerd lakes area.
Whistler has been serving the hearing impaired in Brainerd for nearly 16 years. Whistler will be working out of the new Beltone location, at 624 Fifth St., Brainerd, across from the Brainerd Area Civic Center.
Jacobsen receives IMI certification
Paul Jacobsen, Brainerd, recently received IMI Certification from the International Mediation Institute.
Jacobsen has been a licensed attorney for 25 years, with the last 14 years practicing in the Brainerd lakes area.
The International Mediation Institute, based in the Netherlands, was created to generate confidence in the mediation process by requiring high competency standards. The certification process includes reviews by users of the mediation services, which are summarized by an outside organization and placed online at www.imimediation.org.
Jacobsen has provided Alternative Dispute Resolution services since 1995, having conducted more than 500 mediations to settle disputes in the areas of commercial, construction, real estate, family law and probate. He is listed on the Minnesota Supreme Court's Rule 114 list of qualified neutrals, and also is a mediator for the American Arbitration Association.
Lee named PORT Girls program director<br>
Jeffrey Lee was hired as program director for the PORT Girls Group Home, Brainerd.
Lee was most recently a correctional officer for the Missouri Department of Corrections. Other recent work experience in both Illinois and Missouri includes a variety of camp positions, supervising staff and campers at a Girl Scout Camp and implementing emotional/behavioral programs in a junior high school setting, some with an outdoor/experiential education component. From 2000-2002, he worked at the Minnesota Learning Center in Brainerd.
His bachelor's degree, with a double major in psychology and criminal justice, is from Central Methodist University, Park Hills, Mo.
Fugate joins The Sound Connection
Jason Fugate was recently hired as the lead installer of the mobile electronics division at The Sound Connection Inc. in Brainerd, Ben Larson, chief executive officer, reported.
Fugate has more than five years of mobile electronics experience in the field of: remote car starters, alarms, audio, video and interior modification.
Fugate is a Mobile Electronics Certification Program certified installer and has been trained by: Compustar, remote starters, Kent, Wash.; Kenwood, mobile and marine audio and video, Long Beach, Calif.; Dynamat, sound deadening material, Hamilton, Ohio; JL Audio, mobile and marine audio and integration, Miramar, Fla.; as well as attending The Snake Pit, mobile electronics training, Vista, Calif.
Jennissen joins Staples campus of CLC
STAPLES - Steve Jennissen is the new counselor at the Staples campus of Central Lakes College.
He is a native of Staples who had been serving as director of Career Services at St. Paul College the past two years. Jennissen has counseling experience at Pine Technical College. He also has been a mental health practitioner and behavior analyst.
His position is funded by an Access, Opportunity and Success Grant from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which will also involve outreach efforts at targeted area high schools and occasional work at Brainerd campus.
Three join J.C. Penney Styling Salon
BAXTER - Trinity Genoch, Tara Layman and Brittany Gordon joined the J.C. Penney Styling Salon in Baxter.
Genoch has been a stylist for six years. She went to Model College of Hair Design in St. Cloud. She was employed at Panache Salon and Day Spa for two-and-a-half years departing as the head stylist and at Allure for almost two years in Shakopee.
Layman was trained at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wis. She specializes in razor cuts, styling and color services.
Gordon was trained at the Regency Beauty Institute in Blaine. She works with cuts, colors and updos.
Lakewood Health reports program, partnership
STAPLES - Lakewood Health System announced a new, comprehensive joint replacement program called "Joint Connection," which is a partnership with Northern Orthopedics of Brainerd and offers joint replacement care from consultation through recovery.
Practicing surgeons from Northern Orthopedics include Dr. Paul Rud and Dr. Christopher Metz.
Lakewood Health System has been offering orthopedic services through consulting physicians for more than 25 years. The addition of Joint Connection allows Lakewood Health System to offer comprehensive joint replacement services in Staples. Jennifer Strickland, registered nurse, is the Joint Connection Care coordinator and will guide each patient through the entire joint replacement process.
Good Samaritan Society gains recognition
Good Samaritan Society-Home Care and Hospice in Brainerd announced it has been named to the 2009 HomeCare EliteT, a compilation of the top performing home health agencies in the United States.
This annual review identifies the Top 25 percent of agencies and further highlights the top 100 and top 500 agencies overall. Winners are ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement, and financial performance.
Home Care Director Carrie Nelson credited dedicated, knowledgeable and caring staff with the company's ability to rank as one of the top 25 percent HomeCare Elite.

Chamber to host Santa Parade reception
LITTLE FALLS - The Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting the public to a reception on the south lawn of the Cass Gilbert Depot beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday before the Santa Parade.
Sponsoring this event is Perkins Restaurant & Bakery.
Hot chocolate, apple cider and bakery items from Perkins will be served outside the depot. The Santa Parade starts at 6 p.m. at the corner of Lindbergh Drive and West Broadway. Santa will not be at the depot, but watch for him on the last float in the parade.
Expanded light displays in LeBourget Park are compliments of the Lindbergh Lions. The City of Lights is lit for the season starting Friday night. The West Side Improvement Association will be lighting the Veterans Memorial Bridge during the parade.
Lakewood foundation sponsors Season of Lights
STAPLES - The Lakewood Health System Foundation and the Lakewood Health System Hospice Department are hosting the 14th annual Season of Lights lighting ceremonies.
The Season of Lights is an opportunity to sponsor an illuminated tree light to remember and celebrate special individuals and loved ones. White lights are $5, amber lights are $10, blue lights are $15, red lights are $20, and star lights are $25. Donations will be accepted anytime, but to be included in the program listing, donations are requested before Nov. 30. All proceeds benefit the hospice program at Lakewood Health System.
The lighting ceremony will take place at two locations. One is planned at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples and the other at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Long Prairie Memorial Hospital and Home.

Panache hosts color workshop
BAXTER - Panache Salon and Day Spa, Baxter, reported its stylists attended an advanced hair color workshop taught by Aveda educator Rebecca on Nov. 4.
Participants learned the latest color techniques, hottest fashion colors, and gathered ideas for custom hair color blends.
Voiceover artist workshop planned at CLC Dec. 7
A Dec. 7 workshop at Central Lakes College will introduce the types of voice-overs and what it takes to get started as a voice actor.
A professional voice actor from Voices for All will lead the workshop, which is for those interested in TV and radio commercials, documentary, or audio book narration. Participants will be recorded while reading from scripts and receive an evaluation.
The workshop will be from 6-8 p.m. in the Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus of CLC.

Certified food manager training set at CLC
A Certified Food Manager course is planned 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 8, 10, and 15 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College.
Certification is required in most Minnesota food establishments. The class meets with instructor Colette Pohlkamp.
Participants are trained and tested through the ServSafe Serving Safe Food Certification course. They will learn about potentially hazardous foods and safe food handling practices, the HACCP system of food safety, setting up standards and completion upon passing the required exam.
The course fee is $160. Registration deadline is Dec. 1.

Construction fall protection workshop scheduled
Central Lakes College will host a course covering the Occupationals Safety and Health Administration fall protection requirements from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Business and Industry Center.
The course fee is $110. Instructor is Joe Casey of Casey Consultants.

'Going into Business' workshop is Dec. 10
The "Going Into Business For Yourself" workshop is planned 6-9 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.
This session is designed to cover all areas of business start-up, helpful advice on how to get your dream off the ground and stay profitable, including financing a new venture.
Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center's team of consultants at no charge to the individual.
Tuition is $49 per person plus $29 for each additional business partner. Instructor is Jay Bock. The deadline to register is Dec. 3.

Power Limited course offered at CLC
The Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College plans to host a continuing education course for holders of the Minnesota Power Limited Technician License 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 10 and Dec. 11.
The course covers requirements for 16 hours of instruction. If you need to renew your license before Dec. 1, you will need to take the 16-hour course, CLC reports.
This course has been approved by the Minnesota State Board of Electricity. The workshop is taught by Riverland Community College at a cost of $300 (includes lunch).
The course will cover applicable articles and sections of the 2008 National Electrical Code, Minnesota Statutes and Rules governing electrical work, and a review of the basic elements of electricity and electrical calculations.
Participants should bring a calculator and the 2005 or 2008 NEC Code book. Code books are available in class for $82.
The deadline to register is Dec. 3.

Grand Casino donates money for diabetes
ONAMIA - In an effort to support diabetes awareness and fund research, Grand Casino Mille Lacs donated $2 for every concert ticket purchased for the sold-out Bret Michaels shows on Nov. 6-7.
In total, a donation of $5,000 was made to the American Diabetes Association.
Since November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and Bret Michaels, a type 1 diabetic himself, was performing, the casino saw this as a perfect opportunity.
The first 500 concertgoers through the door each night also received a Bret Michaels diabetes awareness bracelet.
Molly Duerr, associate director for the Minnesota Area American Diabetes Association said this donation will directly benefit diabetes research and educational programs.
