Icy roads resulted in several vehicle crashes Sunday morning, including one in which a Merrifield man was critically injured.
Donald R. Carlson, 84, Merrifield, was a passenger in a vehicle that lost control on the icy roadway and rolled over in a ditch about 8 a.m. Sunday on Highway 210 at Crow Wing County Road 59 in Ironton, the State Patrol reported.
Carlson was transported to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby, where the State Patrol reported he was in critical condition.
The driver, Deloris C. Olds, 73, Merrifield, suffered no apparent injuries, the State Patrol reported.
The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department assisted, one of several crashes reported Sunday morning Sgt. Chad Paulson said.
Cass County Sheriff's deputies responded to about five vehicles in ditches, said dispatcher George Martin, though no injures were reported.
"I don't think there were a lot of cars out there because people knew how bad roads were," Martin said.
The State Patrol also responded to a single-vehicle crash near Park Rapids in which four people were injured. In that crash the driver was attempting to pass another vehicle on Highway 71 when he lost control on the icy road.
Aitkin, Cass and Crow Wing counties were in a freezing rain advisory until 4 p.m. Sunday. Fog and mist in Brainerd dissipated by noon.
On Monday, the National Weather Service in Duluth has forecasted partly sunny skies in the morning then mostly cloudy in the afternoon with a 30 percent chance of snow showers and high temps of 28-33 degrees.
