Ice on lakes not yet safe, reports Sheriff Todd Dahl
Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl is reminding the public that though ice is beginning to form on area lakes they are not safe for foot or vehicle traffic.
The temperatures have not been cold enough for an adequate amount of ice to form, Dahl said.
The DNR recommends 4 inches of ice for ice fishing or other activities on foot, 5 inches for snowmobile or ATV travel, 8-12 inches for cars or small pickups and 12-15 inches for a medium-sized truck.
Dahl said the recommendations are merely guidelines for new, clear, solid ice.
Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe.
