Thankful for ... and more Essays from children
Gina Czech and Lisa Lindley, teachers at Forestview Middle School in Baxter, collected essays from a group of sixth-graders who wrote on the topic, "What am I thankful for?" The following is a sampling of those letters. Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving!
Family is greatest treasure
A youth pastor in our community said, "A family is the closest thing you can get to how much God loves us."
One of the most important things that I am thankful for is my family. I am thankful for them because they love me no matter what happens.
I will start by introducing my family. My family includes my mom, Kris; my dad, Aaron; me; my 9-year-old brother, Ian; my 8-year-old brother, Matt; my 6-year-old sister, Isabelle; my very mischievous little sister, Emma; and last but not least, my little copycat brother, Eli, who is 2.
I love my family because they provide love and protection. My family is the only people I can go to for comfort when I am sad or mad or something. My friends can't always be there for me. If my friends can't be there, my family is always there to back me up. They are also a lot of fun to be around.
My family cares about me no matter what I look like or what I do. My family is my greatest treasures and there is nothing or no one that can change that. I have to admit that even though I'm talking about how much I love them I still feel sort of guilty because I do think that they can be pretty annoying. I'm not perfect so I get on their nerves too. Overall we're a pretty close-knit family. I also know that the ones that get on my nerves the most will grow out of it eventually. - Abbey Sutton.
A house in which to live
Millions of people around the world do not have any shelter at all. I am very thankful that I have a house in which to live. I am thankful for my house because it keeps me safe and comfortable. We have some privacy too. I am also very fortunate to have my own room.
I am glad my family can afford our house. If I didn't have a house I would be very cold in the winter. Many people around the world live like that and their lives are very miserable. I feel bad for people that can't afford any shelter and I would not like to live in it all year. Would you like to live without any shelter for a majority of your life?
It is nice to have a private space in which to live with my family. We have heat, electricity and we have running water. We are also safe from any criminals that might want to break into our house. Many people that have a house or an apartment should be very thankful. When I grow up I hope to provide a safe and comfortable house for my family and I hope to help more homeless people. - Tristan Brecht.
Thankful for my family
When I think back to when I was a little kid it is hard to remember a time when I was not with family. I am spending a lot more time with my friends now, but I always love spending time with my family. That is why I am thankful for, and close to my family.
My family and I enjoy doing things together. We enjoy spending time together because we can all relate. We can entertain each other and we do not need other people or things to have fun. When I was in first grade my dad was deployed to Kuwait for a year. He came home for spring break and we went to Key West, Fla. I snorkeled, went to cool museums and swam in the ocean for the first time. It was one of the best times I have ever had with my family. I am glad my siblings and I can have fun together too. When you get along with your siblings they tend to share with you and help you out when you need it most. I am also thankful for my relationship with my parents. We trust each other. When you trust your parents you feel safe and secure. When your parents trust you they will give you more freedom to do many different things.
We are planning a vacation for spring break and I cannot wait because that means I get to relax and hang out with my family. Sometimes it is nice to get away from all the parties and sleepovers and spend time with family. Because we have fun together, my family can be friends, mentors or teachers. Having a family that I can trust, depend on and joke with really makes a big difference in my life. - Carina Figliuzzi.
Education, clothing and home
Did you know 200,000 children are sold into slavery every year in Africa? Some African parents can't afford to buy enough food for their families or even put a roof over their heads so they sell their children. I am thankful to be fortunate with my education, clothing and home.
Most African people live in huts made of cow dung and straw. I think about the kids in Africa who most likely don't go to school. I enjoy having choices of what I'm going to wear every day and to be able to go to sleep in a comfortable bed at night. I love going to school to learn new things. Learning a new thing every day and to see my friends and teachers puts a smile on my face.
I'm overjoyed to be fortunate to go to school, to have fashionable clothes and a place to call home. These things play a big role in my life. With school I have access to unlimited opportunities. I am comforted and encouraged by the support my family gives me. I'm thankful for the many choices I can choose from. - Veronica VonSpreecken.
What you and I could and should be thankful for
What if you only had money for one meal a day? I am thankful for money because money buys all of our items that help us live. Not just my family, but the whole entire United States. A lot of countries are not as lucky as us, for an example according to Orange County Register (Web site), people in Africa have to live in metal shacks. They also can only use plumbing 4-6 p.m. Their parents make less money than we do. In my opinion, Africa children are skinnier than we are because they only get one meal a day. ... In the future, I would like to organize fundraisers and volunteer to help those who live in Africa.
To help contribute to Africa I would donate to charities. I would give some books to Books for Africa, to help them with their schools. You can send any books to Africa. ... I would also volunteer at Feed My Starving Children. That is when you make food and they send off to people who need it more than we do. ...
I am grateful for the money that I have. Also that I should not take advantage of what I have because somewhere else someone has harder lives than we do. What do you think? I think I should think of others before ourselves even though it can be hard. If someone else has a hard life, then we should help them because they need it. - Chloe Smith.
Family and friends
Many people will walk in and out of your life but only true friends will stay. When people ask you what you're thankful for, the thought never comes to you that you take what you have for granted. Like family and friends, they're always there for you no matter what life throws at you. Without my family and my friends, my life would be very difficult.
My parents are always there for me, to help me and to care for me. They catch me when I fall. My friends help and care for me too. I feel elated when I get to see my whole family and all my friends. My parents provide shelter, food and comfort. They love me and we always have a good time together. My family goes on vacation sometimes and they always turn out to be the best days of my life! My friends and I are always laughing about random stuff and we always have a good time together too!
In the end we all have something to be thankful for, no matter what it is. I'm very thankful that I have a family and that I have friends. - Calihan Yliniemi.
Life without a family
Did you ever wonder what your life would be like without a family? Without a real home, or someone who loves you? There are a lot of kids out there who don't have families or have had something happen to them. That is why I am writing this in hopes it will help people realize that family is an important thing you should not take for granted.
I can remember back as a little kid thinking my parents would always be there and I was one of the lucky ones whose family didn't break up or had something bad happen to them. And I know most kids do take advantage and think their family will always be there, but that isn't always the case. A large portion of the children in the world have had something happen to their family or have never had a family to begin with.
I believe it is our responsibility to help those children. Everyone should have a family. I hope this essay has given you new and old knowledge about the orphaned children of the world. We should all pitch in at helping those kids out there, the unlucky ones who don't have families to love them. - Timothy Roehrich.
Have you ever thought how lucky you are?
Have you ever thought what it would like to live in a country without freedom? I think it would be scary. I say we are lucky to live in a place where people want to come to live just to be free. I think that's pretty cool.
I'm thankful that I get a free education, access to hospitals and also access to stores to buy things like food, clothes and medicine. Most countries don't let you have any of those things. In some countries they don't even let you choose who you get married to.
When I hear "The Land of the Free," I know I'm safe. So next time you're angry about something, remember you could be in a country where they don't have freedom. - Jordan Whitehead.
Lives to save
Do you have a dad or a mom that is a firefighter? Well I do. My dad is a firefighter for the Brainerd Fire Department. He has been a firefighter for six years and every time he would come home from a fire call or a car accident, he always says, "I love my job. I love to help others and I would put my life at risk to save others." That's how much he loves to be a firefighter.
When I was little I always told my dad that when a fire truck goes by our house, the people inside the truck look scary. Well, he always told me that, "They're not here to scare you; they are here to help you." Then one day my dad came home and he said he was going to be a firefighter. I said that I was going to have another family because there are a lot of firefighters that care about my dad and his family.
In conclusion, my life would be hard without firefighters that risk their lives every day to care for me and the town and not let fires ruin the lives of me or others. That's why I am thankful for my dad and all of the firefighters that risk their lives to save me and others. - Jayda Johnson.
