Holiday travelers were stranded in a winter storm that dumped up to 16 inches of snow in the area. Many spent this night in hotels, schools and churches, even homes. Temperatures fell to below zero.

Clarence Taatjes and son, Chad, Route 7, Brainerd, hooked a 9 1/2-pound walleye on Gull Lake recently in eight feet of water. Taatjes used a minnow for bait.
40 years ago (1968)
A be-whiskered old man all dressed in red will arrive in Brainerd via modern transportation devices Friday morning to officially launch the Christmas season here.
60 years ago (1948)
The grand opening of the 1948 Christmas season in Brainerd was a gala affair. Crowds surged along the sidewalk and into the stores and Santa Claus was very much in evidence to greet the youngsters.
80 years ago (1928)
Streamers of electric colored lights in downtown business streets will again this year extend greetings and warmth of the Yuletide and New Year's seasons to Brainerd people and visitors.
100 years ago (1908)
Hon. C.F. Kindred expressed surprise and gratification at the growth of Brainerd. He found many big changes. He said that he believes the city is destined for much greater size than at present. Mr. Kindred was one of the leading promoters of Brainerd a quarter of a century go.
