LOCAL BRIEFS Tickets still available for Grand House tour
Tickets are still available for the Heartland Symphony Orchestra Grand House tour slated for Saturday.
Tours of seven Brainerd/Baxter homes will be from 9 a.m. to noon with brunch from noon to 1 p.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with brunch from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Brainerd.
Tickets, available at the Brainerd Dispatch, are $20. For more information, call 829-3379.
The event is sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
Homeowners participating in the tour include David and Mary Boran, Gwen Burggraff, James and Jan Almquist, Dan and Liz Nordenson, Loren and Laura Beilke, Paul and Teresa Hirst and Todd and Connie Lyscio.
Four Brainerd High students recognized
Brainerd High School Principal Erich Heise announced that four students, Rachel Lindman, Megan Saley, Sara Swenson and Samuel Walker, have been named Commended Students of the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Corp.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2007 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, these students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2007 competition by taking the 2005 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Oberstar in Brainerd, Baxter this week
Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., intends to meet with area Realtors, representatives of the Farm Service Agency and tour new Crow Wing County buildings on Wednesday and Thursday.
His session with the Realtors is set for 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at 15115 Edgewood Drive in Baxter. Oberstar will tour new Crow Wing County buildings between 2:45 and 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. On Thursday, Oberstar will meet with representatives of the Farm Service Agency at 7118 Clearwater Road in Baxter.
Spring and summer registration starts at CLC
Registration is under way at Central Lakes College, Brainerd and Staples, for those wanting to enroll in spring and summer classes.
Anyone new to CLC who wants to register for classes may contact the Admissions Office in Brainerd at (218) 855-8037 or Staples at (218) 894-5175 for assistance.
Available in the printed CLC Course Schedule at the information desk and other locations on each campus is a complete list of courses offered during weekdays, evenings, weekends, online and off-campus.
The schedule also includes a registration planning form.

The spring term begins Jan. 10 and the 2007 summer session starts June 4.
Walseth named to national board
Brainerd Superintendent Jerry Walseth was elected by his peers from the Minnesota Association of School Administrators to serve as one of four Minnesota delegates to the American Association of School Administrators Regional Governing Board.
This board represents the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota.
The combined representatives of the governing boards from across the country meet twice annually, once the day before the AASA National Conference on Education and once again in July. This year's national conference will be in New Orleans in early March.
Care packages in works for local troops in Iraq
The Brainerd Family Readiness Group will be assembling Christmas care packages Tuesday for 35 area soldiers stationed in Iraq.
Those who wish to donate items for the soldiers, particularly entertainment-type items like DVDs, CDs, magazines and books, may drop those items off anytime between now until Tuesday at the Brainerd Armory, said Tressie Schneider, a group co-leader.
