Local oratorical contest planned for Dec. 10 by Legion
The 71st National High School Oratorical Contest sponsored by the American Legion will be April 4-6 in Indianapolis.
Starting on the local level students across the country will be competing against each other hoping to advance to the finals and a chance at the $18,000 first-place, $16,000 second-place or $14,000 third-place scholarship awards. Smaller scholarships are awarded at the State level. Only one contestant per state advances.
Carl Sydney Hanson American Legion Post No. 255 of Brainerd will sponsor a contest at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10. The competition will be conducted at the American Legion building at 708 Front St.
Contestants must be enrolled in a high school or high school level program (public, parochial, military or private); be in ninth- through 12-grade throughout the time of participation; and not reach age 20 by the date of the National Finals Contest.
Contestants will be required to deliver a prepared oration on some aspect of the Constitution of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.

The public is invited to attend. However, due to limited seating, family members of the contestants will have first option.
