Brainerd opens with win
GYMNASTICS
WILLMAR - Sam Smith won the uneven bars and floor exercise, as well as the all-around title, as the Brainerd Warriors opened the season Thursday with a 137.6-135.325 Central Lakes Conference victory over the Willmar Cardinals.

Teammate Shana Lingwall won the vault.

"I thought all the girls did a nice job," Warriors coach Dave Maras said. "I was especially impressed with our bar sets. As of late we were struggling there a little bit, but the girls really came out well tonight.

"We had a nice vault, and our floor was excellent. Some of the (beam) scores were quite a bit lower than I anticipated, due to some new rules. That took the wind out of our sails for (beam), but all in all I was very pleased for a first meet. We competed well, and kept our composure."
