McAllister places second
NORDIC SKIING
ST. CLOUD - Brainerd's Hannah McAllister finished second in the season-opening St. Cloud Tech Invite on Thursday at Riverside Park.

The meet consisted of single elimination 1-kilometer sprints. Ten skiers raced in each heat, with the first five finishers advancing to the second round, five to the semifinals and five to the championship round.

McAllister won her first three races and was second in the finale. Brainerd's Amanda Finstad was fifth and Jenna Ruzich was ninth.

"I think those three are going to push each other all season," Warriors coach Nicole Kellerman said. "There's a lot of camaraderie there and a lot of intensity. I think the girls are going to surprise us by the end of the year."

Teammates Arianna Brown and Tomi Majerus made the semifinals.

In the boys' meet, Brainerd's Pat Mangan advanced to the semifinals.

"Pat stepped on a pole and had a fall," Kellerman said. "Otherwise, he was leading all the rounds leading up to that."

Teammates Ross Duval and Josh Murrey made it to the quarterfinals.

Four Brainerd junior high skiers reached the finals. Katie Montgomery was eighth and Allison Kosobud 10th in the girls' meet, Vean Baker was eighth and Ty Hadrits ninth in the boys' event.

Brainerd is scheduled to compete in the St. Cloud Apollo relay meet Tuesday at Riverside Park. Each four-person team will have two skiers skate and two skiers classic.
