57 teachers to lose jobs
Staff Writer Fifty-seven probationary teachers - first-, second- and third-year teachers - in the Brainerd School District will lose their jobs at the end of this school year.
The Brainerd School Board Monday agreed to notify all the probationary licensed staff that their contracts will be terminated at the end of this school year and the contracts will not be renewed in the 2008-09 school year.
Steve Dickinson, Brainerd director of business services, said some of these probationary teachers whose contracts will not be renewed may be asked back depending on what programs the school board decides to cut.
Brainerd School Board member Bob Nystrom said the teachers whose contracts will not be renewed are well respected in the district.

"This is a step back and with a real heavy heart I say I'm sorry," said Nystrom.
Board Chair Kent Montgomery echoed Nystrom's comments. Montgomery said he met with several teachers at a dinner meeting earlier this year and the teachers talked to him about how excited they were to teach in the Brainerd School District. Montgomery said this is not what these teachers deserve.
Montgomery said, "This has nothing to do with assignments or the subject they teach. It's simply based on their time in the district."
Board member Lew Hudson said the district encouraged many students to go into teaching, followed their progress and, in a few cases, were hired by the district.
"Some are on this list and that hurts more than anything," he said.
