Land acquisition secures link connecting trail, park
Outdoors Editor The final link connecting Crow Wing State Park to the 110-mile Paul Bunyan State Trail was secured Tuesday with a land transfer to the park that includes 3.13 miles of Mississippi River frontage.
"By essentially connecting Lake Bemidji State Park to Crow Wing State Park, we've taken another step toward realizing our vision of creating an interconnected system of parks and trails throughout Minnesota," said Dorian Grilley, executive director of the Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota.
The land transfer expands the park by 552 acres and allows trail planners to incorporate views of the Mississippi River into the Paul Bunyan Trail's southernmost segment. The park has remnants of a frontier town and a section of the historic Woods Trail, once part of the Red River Ox Cart Trail that connected St. Paul to Red River Valley settlements.
Terry McGaughey, Parks and Trails Council project manager, said it's fitting that the final link between Crow Wing State Park and the Paul Bunyan Trail consists of Mississippi River frontage.
"The signature of the Paul Bunyan Trail is its woods and waters," McGaughey said. "The 110-mile trail passes nine rivers and streams and the shorelines of 21 lakes. The Mississippi riverfront will be the busiest section of an already popular trail. It has spectacular scenery and its proximity to Baxter makes for easy access to the trail."
Since 2002, the Parks and Trails Council has worked with several partners on this latest acquisition, including The Conservation Fund, Paul Bunyan Trail Association, Minnesota DNR and the U.S. Department of Defense's Army Compatible Use Buffer program.
