County to get sales tax refund from jail CASS COUNTY BOARD Correspondent WALKER - Administrator Robert Yochum reported to Cass County commissioners Tuesday that the county can expect to receive a $35,936 sales tax refund for the Cass share of building costs on the new Crow Wing County jail.
Contractors had to pay state sales tax on materials as the building progressed. Cass and Crow Wing then paid their share of those taxes. Now, both will apply to the state for a tax refund, because jails are exempt from sales tax.
The board authorized Sheriff Randy Fisher to purchase under the state contract six new patrol vehicles and one recreational vehicle from his 2007 budget.
Minnesota Department of Corrections will pay Cass County $58,835 for July 2007 through June 2009 to manage one sentence-to-serve crew. That program enables county jail inmates to work for government and nonprofit agencies during days while serving their sentences at the jail.
The board approved adding Pike Bay Township Police Department to the law enforcement agencies operating under a cooperative law enforcement agreement with Leech Lake Tribal Police Department.
