Employees donate cash, turkeys to food shelf
Members of the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees Local 1601 recently inaugurated an outreach event dubbed "Turkey Trot" that produced a donation of $500 and 300 pounds of frozen turkeys to a local food shelf.
The MAPE Turkey Trot originated as a unique means to reach out to its membership during the holiday season. Approximately 225 frozen turkeys were purchased and delivered to MAPE members in and around Aitkin, Baxter, Brainerd, Camp Ripley, Deerwood, Little Falls, Motley, Pierz, Staples and Wadena. Many of those members in turn donated their turkeys or cash to the food shelf.
In partnership with the Salvation Army, the MAPE initiative became a means to help families in the region served by Local 1601.
"With the Red Kettles less prevalent and thus fewer donations for the Salvation Army, we wanted to show our support as stakeholders in the communities where we live and work," said Ron Rardin, president of MAPE Local 1601. "The Salvation Army makes a difference in the lives of so many people day in and day out. We wanted to do our part. This was a fun way to partner and connect with our membership."
Members organizing the Turkey Trot, along with Rardin, were fellow human services professionals Mary Welliver, Carol Rose, Pat Jacobson, Dan Davidson from MnSCU and Joe McMahon, MAPE business agent.
Grant aids Mid-State Education District
LITTLE FALLS - The Mid-State Education District's $219,675 grant in 2007 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Program benefited the district and 10 school districts, USDA Rural Development officials said this week.
Steve Wenzel, state director of USDA Rural Development, spoke at an official recognition ceremony of the grant in Little Falls.
The money will be used to continue the district's interactive television program.
Through Mid-State's ITV classroom network educators from Central Lakes College, St. Cloud State University and other Minnesota colleges and universities offer college courses to daytime students in high school and non-traditional adult night courses.
