Salvation Army call heeded
Numerous volunteers responded after the Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army made a plea to the community last week for more volunteers and dollars for the Red Kettle Campaign, Captain Brian Reed, administrator of the Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army, said in a news release.
The Salvation Army of Brainerd Lakes saw an increase in both volunteer hours at locations and dollars given in the kettles, Reed said.
With four days left in the Brainerd lakes Christmas campaign, the Salvation Army is at 60 percent of its $100,000 goal, with about $67,200 in donations.
The Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army also reported an unexpected increase of less fortunate families who need Christmas assistance including toys, Christmas meals and other services.
On Tuesday the Salvation Army gave out more than 700 food baskets and helped more than 2,000 children.
"This is much bigger than we projected before," Reed said. "Every year (we) are seeing an increase in services during Christmas season and throughout the whole year with families in need of assistance."
