Group to assist in budget process
The Brainerd School District is forming an advisory committee that will assist school officials and board members in the budget process.

Steve Dickinson, director of business services for the district, said the committee, made up of about five or six community members who have a financial background, will meet once a month with school administrators, district business office staff and the school board finance committee chair to study the district's budget process and make suggestions and comments. Dickinson said he has a list of about a dozen community members who have either volunteered for the committee or were recommended by school board members and other school administrators.

The board likely will discuss the finance advisory committee and decide on its committee members at its 11:30 a.m. Jan. 2 reorganizational board meeting, Dickinson said.

Dickinson said the 2008-09 budget is pretty set right now because of the necessary $5.5 million in budget reductions needed to be made by then. The advisory committee members will likely make more long-term budgetary recommendations, he said.

The district had a similar committee that formed in 2001 and met for about a year. This committee will be similar in nature. Dickinson said the committee will be meeting for the first time in mid- to late-January.
