Arrests made in area mail-theft incident
Senior Reporter More than 30 county residents were victims of mail theft Wednesday, mainly in the Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood and Aitkin areas.
And with the help of area residents, law enforcement made arrests in the case late Wednesday afternoon.
Three area men and a juvenile, ranging in age from 17-21 from the Crosby and Deerwood areas, were arrested Wednesday afternoon on County Road 30 after law enforcement received tips from residents.
Lt. Dave Larson, Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department, said mail, which was stolen, opened and discarded still was being recovered Friday. Open mail was reported along roadsides and in ditches. Because of U.S. mail tampering laws, Larson said the suspects are looking at felony charges.
Calls from residents reported that open mail was found along the road. A caller was able to provide information on the suspects' vehicle, including the license plate number. Police officers from Deerwood and Crosby located the car and the suspects, making the arrests.
"Citizens really helped us out on this," Larson said.
Anyone who witnessed a 1993 green Infinity four-door vehicle in the area before the arrests, which took place at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, or anyone who finds discarded mail is asked to contact the sheriff's department at 829-4749.
