Lauren Franken, 18, Hartford, S.D., was traveling southeast on Luzon Road in the military Humvee and Christopher Hamann, 29, South Shore, S.D., was traveling northwest on Luzon Road in a military supply truck. The Humvee veered into the other lane because of the dust and collided head on with the supply truck, the sheriff's office reported. Illustration

Later the same day while approaching two adult anglers who were fishing from shore and drinking beer, at a remote state forest area lake, the two anglers tossed their beer cans in the lake. The two said they panicked because they thought it was illegal to drink beer in the state forest. They were informed having a beer was OK but throwing garbage into the lake was a bit of a problem. Sullivan assisted with four red breasted merganser ducklings that were rescued in the ditch off State Highway 371. A state trooper was in the area and responded to ensure the duckling's safety after citizens completed the rescue. Sullivan assisted with the ducklings transport for care. Illustration
