A Chevy Cavalier broke through the ice near an ice heave not far from the Birchdale access on North Long Lake, north of Brainerd. The vehicle was discovered by a cross-country skier, who believed the vehicle had just gone through the ice Wednesday.

A man riding a four-wheeler went through the ice into deep water on the lake's Merrifield Bay side in the narrows between the bay and the big lake. The Brainerd Fire Department received the call for an ice rescue at 4:11 p.m.

Minnesota currently has more than 175 water bodies designated as infested with zebra mussels. Designation does not mean each body of water is confirmed to be infested, but that zebra mussels have been detected in a lake accessible by boat, and spread is likely between connected waters.
