CO Dustie Speldrich (Willow River) received complaints about ATVs operating on state forest snowmobile trails and rutting them up. ATVs are allowed on groomed trails within the state forest only. Grant-in-aid snowmobile trails are off-limits. CO Chelsey Best (Remer) Trail conditions have deteriorated over the last week with the warm weather. It’s worth mentioning that most local trails remain closed to ATVs through at least April 1, and some later depending on spring conditions.

Complaints of garbage and wood blocks left behind were reported and investigated. Fish house owners are reminded to remove all blocking under their houses so area residents don’t have to do shore clean-up. Littering still remains an issue on the lakes. Mn DNR file photo.

CO Duke Broughten (Longville) - Drugs in fish houses continues to be a common occurrence while checking fishermen. CO Jim Guida (Brainerd East) - Some anglers were contacted using extra lines, unattended lines, littering, and illegally consuming marijuana while also in violation of their limited driver’s license. CO Karl Hadrits (Crosby) - Enforcement contacts were made for illegal use of ski trails, fishing without licenses and trout stamps, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

CO Randy Posner (Brainerd West) reports that he worked on fishing enforcement. The ice anglers were out trying their luck. Ice conditions vary from open water areas to 14 inches of ice. Violations CO Posner observed were unattended lines and extra hooks. The ice conditions have improved, however slush and large pressure ridges have developed on Gull Lake and other area lakes. Working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service on a turtle found crossing a road in the Gull Lake area that turned out to be a gopher tortoise, native to the far Southeast United States and a protected species listed as “threatened” under federal law. MN DNR

A horse owner called to report his horse was attacked and injured by another animal. After looking around the property the likely suspect is a bear. MN DNR

A good-sized female bear was found dead along the Wildfire Road in Fern Township, Hubbard County. The bear had a gunshot wound and it appeared to have been dragged by a motor vehicle for quite some distance. Anyone with information regarding this bear is encouraged to call the Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-652-9093. Cash rewards for tips leading to an arrest are available. You can remain anonymous.

found ... an angler attempting to noodle sunfish while swimming (the act of catching fish by hand). No fish had been caught and the angler was getting tired. He explained the rules and advised the angler that he might have better luck with a hook and line.

With the assistance of CO Forsberg, CO Warren, and CO Stattelman six anglers were found with 856 sunfish and crappies in their possession, an over limit of 676 fish.
