CO Tim Collette (Brainerd) worked the Gull Chain and other area lakes. Violations included angling without a valid license, overloaded boat, lack of life preservers, riding on boat transoms and front decks of pontoons, kids under 10 not wearing life jackets, transporting aquatic vegetation and transporting zebra mussels. CO Randy Posner (Staples) reports boaters and people floating the Crow Wing River on tubes were out in full force. Watercraft registration violations were observed. He reminded tubers to be sure to dispose of their cans and trash appropriately.

CO Tim Collette (Brainerd #1) - Too many walleyes over 20 inches is a common violation and anglers were caught this week trimming tails with scissors to make them appear under the 20-inch mark.

CO Tim Collette (Brainerd) mediated a continuing dispute between lakeshore property owners and bow fishermen that wake the property owners up in the middle of the night by shining their bright lights into houses and cabins and making noise with generators and loud music. One property owner decided to fight back and started shooting the bow fishermen with paint balls. Both sides received warnings and/or tickets.

CO Randy Posner (Staples) checked turkey hunters afield; reports of success have been poor. The snow has slowed the Tom turkeys’ activity. CO Jim Guida (Brainerd #2) worked fishing and turkey hunting enforcement. Some hunters in the “A” season found success despite the existing crunchy snow on the forest floor. CO Dustie Speldrich (Willow River) received complaints about ATVs operating on state forest snowmobile trails and rutting them up. ATVs are allowed on groomed trails within the state forest only. Grant-in-aid snowmobile trails are off-limits. CO Chelsey Best (Remer) Trail conditions have deteriorated over the last week with the warm weather. It’s worth mentioning that most local trails remain closed to ATVs through at least April 1, and some later depending on spring conditions.

Complaints of garbage and wood blocks left behind were reported and investigated. Fish house owners are reminded to remove all blocking under their houses so area residents don’t have to do shore clean-up. Littering still remains an issue on the lakes. Mn DNR file photo.

CO Duke Broughten (Longville) - Drugs in fish houses continues to be a common occurrence while checking fishermen. CO Jim Guida (Brainerd East) - Some anglers were contacted using extra lines, unattended lines, littering, and illegally consuming marijuana while also in violation of their limited driver’s license. CO Karl Hadrits (Crosby) - Enforcement contacts were made for illegal use of ski trails, fishing without licenses and trout stamps, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

CO Randy Posner (Brainerd West) reports that he worked on fishing enforcement. The ice anglers were out trying their luck. Ice conditions vary from open water areas to 14 inches of ice. Violations CO Posner observed were unattended lines and extra hooks. The ice conditions have improved, however slush and large pressure ridges have developed on Gull Lake and other area lakes.
