Conservation Officer (CO) Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) and Conservation Officer Candidate (COC) Annette Kyllo assisted an archery hunter retrieve his deer due to a black bear guarding it. Loud noises did not scare the bear away, and the hunter requested assistance. When Sullivan and Kyllo arrived, the bear had moved on and the deer was moved to a safe location for field dressing. Researchers with the DNR are monitoring about 30 radio-collared black bears across the state, especially in zones 27, 25 and 45, and in parts of the no-quota zone. Most of them are in or near the Chippewa National Forest between Grand Rapids and Bigfork. Others are farther north, near Orr or Voyageurs National Park. Some collared bears are also around Camp Ripley, and in northwestern Minnesota, especially near Thief Lake Wildlife Management Area and Plummer. MnDNR photo.

Only black bears live in the wild in Minnesota. They usually are shy and flee when encountered. Never approach or try to pet a bear. Injury to people is rare, but bears are potentially dangerous because of their size, strength and speed.

U.S. hunter Josh Bowmar estimated the (black) bear ran 60 yards (55 meters), then died. He argued that a spear is a more humane weapon than a bow. Alberta environmental ministry spokesman Kyle Ferguson described the hunt as "unacceptable" and "archaic". and added, "We will introduce a ban on spear hunting this fall. In the meantime, we have asked Fish and Wildlife officers to investigate this incident to determine if charges are warranted under existing laws." BrainerdDispatch.com Illustration.
