"I got on the fire department and have loved it every day since," Kurt Doree said. "I love everything about it. I like going to the schools and working with the kids. I love everything about the fire service, but what I love most is the kids. To see their eyes light up and get excited to see you, a firefighter and want to go in the fire truck. I enjoy that."

The firefighters last day with the fire department is Tuesday. The Brainerd City Council restructured the fire department from a mix of full-time and paid on-call firefighters to a fully paid on-call department.

Pastry-type items burn easily in a toaster and are a common kitchen household hazard. When toasting pastry items in the toaster, Capt. Mark Turner of the Brainerd Fire Department advises people to make sure the toaster is out in the open and not under any cupboards. He also advises residents to stay in attendance when toasting food items in the toaster, in case it does catch on fire.
