District 12 - Princeton area: Conservation Officer (CO) Mike Krauel (Mora) was part of a site visit on a new piece of a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and followed up on WMA parking area complaints. While parked at one WMA, Krauel observed two individuals pull up in a car and park near him. Several minutes later, Krauel observed smoke and the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The individuals were surprised to see Krauel when he contacted them. Photo Illustration

Conservation Officer (CO) Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) and Conservation Officer Candidate (COC) Annette Kyllo assisted an archery hunter retrieve his deer due to a black bear guarding it. Loud noises did not scare the bear away, and the hunter requested assistance. When Sullivan and Kyllo arrived, the bear had moved on and the deer was moved to a safe location for field dressing.  While working fishing and ATV enforcement, Conservation Officer (CO) Joyce Kuske (Little Falls) noticed black smoke coming from behind a residence. It turned out to be a family cleaning out a storage shed. The homeowner said they were just burning cardboard and old clothes but in checking the burn pile it was found they were burning household garbage, cans, bottles, metals plastic, furniture and old clothes. Conservation Officer Scott Fitzgerald, Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (CCSRA), with Conservation Officer Candidate (COC) Hughes seized a wild deer that someone had been raising in their home since it was a fawn - without a permit. Mn DNR Conservation Officer Jim Guida (Brainerd East) patrolled lakes for angling activity. A TIP call was investigated on an area lake resulting in an over limit of 76 crappies.

MnDNR Conservation Officer Tim Collette (Brainerd) also responded to a call of naked jet skiers circling pontoons full of people. The officer contacted the jet skiers and the boat operating dangerously with them. Multiple charges are pending.

CO Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) investigated a report of emergent aquatic vegetation being harvested and not removed from the water. The responsible party was located and enforcement action was taken. Illegal use of hydraulic jets also continues to be addressed.

CO Tim Collette (Brainerd) worked the Gull Chain and other area lakes. Violations included angling without a valid license, overloaded boat, lack of life preservers, riding on boat transoms and front decks of pontoons, kids under 10 not wearing life jackets, transporting aquatic vegetation and transporting zebra mussels. CO Randy Posner (Staples) reports boaters and people floating the Crow Wing River on tubes were out in full force. Watercraft registration violations were observed. He reminded tubers to be sure to dispose of their cans and trash appropriately.

CO Tim Collette (Brainerd #1) - Too many walleyes over 20 inches is a common violation and anglers were caught this week trimming tails with scissors to make them appear under the 20-inch mark.
