The roll-in dock sits on shore at the public access on Pine Mountain Lake in Backus on May 3, 2018. You can see ice still covers about half of the lake's surface. In an April 23 Minnesota DNR news release, Nancy Stewart, water recreation program consultant said, “Because of the late ice-out this year, DNR crews will have a shorter window than usual to get boat ramps and docks ready for the May 12 fishing opener, but we will have as many of them ready as possible." CO Randy Posner (Brainerd West) reports that he worked on fishing enforcement. The ice anglers were out trying their luck. Ice conditions vary from open water areas to 14 inches of ice. Violations CO Posner observed were unattended lines and extra hooks. The ice conditions have improved, however slush and large pressure ridges have developed on Gull Lake and other area lakes.
