CROOKSTON, Minn. — A Minneapolis man accused of strangling a woman to death in a Crookston apartment last year will ask a judge to dismiss the charges against him. An attorney for Eddie Markeith Frazier, 50, filed a motion Monday, Aug. 27, to dismiss a grand jury indictment in relation to the death of 48-year-old Tawnja Rene Wallace, who was found dead in her apartment May 3, 2017. Frazier faces two first-degree murder charges and two counts of second-degree murder, all felonies, after investigators found Wallace’s body in a bathtub, according to court documents.
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. -- A Thief River Falls man has been charged with a sex crime for allegedly inappropriately touching a child. Derek James Lian, 33, appeared Monday, Aug. 28, in Pennington County District Court on a second-degree felony count of criminal sexual conduct. He could face 25 years in prison if convicted on the charge that alleges he inappropriately touched a boy who is younger than 13 years old.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. — A truck driver found guilty of causing the death of a 16-year-old boy was sentenced Friday, Aug. 24, in Otter Tail County District Court to spend more than four years in prison. Jason Vadner, 36, of Wheaton, Minn., was sentenced to four years and two months. A jury found him guilty on charges of criminal vehicular homicide and misdemeanor careless driving after a head-on crash on April 13, 2017, killed high school sophomore Jacob Quam, of Vining, Minn.
BACKUS, Minn. -- Authorities on Friday released the name of a Wisconsin woman who drowned last weekend in a rural lake in north-central Minnesota. Panhia Danielle Yang, 37, Sheboygan, Wis., had been swimming near the shore of Ponto Lake, near Backus, about 60 miles south of Bemidji, on Saturday, Aug. 18, according to a release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
ELY, Minn. -- Authorities have identified a teen who drowned while swimming to a floating dock on Twin Lakes north of Ely on Tuesday night. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that 18-year-old Ammar AboEl-Nago sank while swimming to a floating dock at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was a foreign exchange student from Egypt studying at Oberlin College in Ohio, according to the sheriff’s office.
ROSEAU, Minn.—A man from far northern Minnesota has been accused of sexually assaulting a young child. Anthony Joseph Ray Garcia, 23, of Roseau appeared Tuesday in Roseau County District Court on two felony counts of criminal sexual conduct—one in the first degree and the other a second-degree charge—after a child who is less than 10 years old said he inappropriately touched her multiple times, according to court documents. Garcia would come into the child's room while she slept, beginning when she was 6 years old, according to court documents.
BEMIDJI, Minn.—Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered the Minnesota National Guard to help in fighting a wildfire in the Beltrami Island State Forest in northwest Minnesota. The 500-acre wildfire broke out Wednesday, Aug. 22, as the result of of a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources prescribed burn meant to help manage brushlands, according to a release from the governor's office.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Police here have identified the man who died Monday, Aug. 20, after being struck by a train. The victim was Calvin Bengston, 57, whose last known address was in Fergus Falls, according to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd. Emergency dispatchers received a report at about 12:15 a.m. Monday that a southbound Canadian Pacific Railway train had struck a pedestrian at a railroad crossing at Willow Street. The victim, Bengston, was taken by ambulance to the emergency room of Essentia Health St. Mary's hospital in Detroit Lakes, where he died.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji police this week are asking the public to watch out for suspicious activity after the department received multiple reports of gas thefts from vehicles. According to a news release, thieves have drilled out multiple tanks and drained gasoline from them. The thefts have been reported in “various areas” of town, the release said. Fleet trucks and vans have been targeted. Fleet vehicle owners should take extra precautions, police said. The public should report any suspicious activity around businesses, vehicles and homes.
