Snowkiters take to the ice Friday in Garrison ahead of the 14th annual Grand Casino Mille Lacs Kite Crossing Competition. The event is billed as the longest snowkite endurance race in the U.S. spanning 28 miles across Mille Lacs Lake. Brainerd Orange, Brainerd Green and Nisswa penguin teams made up of children ages 7-10 in the parks and recreation pond hockey league, play Saturday at the Nisswa skating rink. The purpose of the pond hockey leagues, with play in Brainerd and Nisswa, is to give participants an opportunity to improve skating skills, learn the game of hockey and have fun, the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department stated. Scores and standings are not be recorded. Teams are co-ed.

Everyone watches the progress of a curling stone thrown by James Koski, Crow Wing County Senior Volunteer of the year, during the ceremonial throwing of the first stone Saturday as part of the opening ceremonies for USA Curling's Club National Championships. Hosted by the Brainerd Curling Club, this year's championships are being held Feb. 10-17 at the Fran Holden Curling Arena at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds and feature ten of the best men's teams and ten of the best women's teams from around the country.

Grandson Erik Eide, great-granddaughter Rhiannon Eide and great-grandson Xander Eide gather around 97-year-old veteran George Eide, wrapped in a quilt made for him by the Brainerd Quilts of Valor Foundation. The quilt was presented during a surprise ceremony Friday at the American Legion in Brainerd. Quilts of Valor is a nationwide grassroots organization founded in 2003 by quilter Catherine Roberts, who got the idea to comfort veterans with quilts while her son was deployed.
