Ready or not, here it comes—the 2018-19 school year is right around the corner! I am thrilled to begin my third year as your superintendent and to roll up my sleeves in effort to get all of the exciting work completed on behalf of our students at ISD 181. This coming year, there are so many thrilling new developments in our community and school district—it is a wonderful time to #BeBrainerd!
The countdown to graduation has begun, which means we are now deep into banquet season. In the last two weeks, Brainerd Public Schools has had the privilege of hosting the prestigious annual Fine Arts and Activities and Athletics banquets to celebrate the accomplishments of our high school students. Standing with proud teachers and family members to recognize the success our well-rounded students have in all 4 A's—Academics, Arts, Activities and Athletics—is always such a joy!
On behalf of the Board of Education, I sincerely thank the Brainerd community for voting "Yes, Yes, Yes," on all three ballot questions at the special election regarding the comprehensive facilities plan to improve our schools. This is great news for our community! The Blueprint 181 plan approved by voters addresses and standardizes critical building security, health, safety, education and space needs in all of the district's schools. Over the next four years, we will witness significant improvements to each of our buildings.
In the wake of recent national and local events, we at Brainerd Public Schools have been taking a look at how we support students' mental health and physical safety. I want to share what I learned about what we currently do districtwide to ensure the well-being and safety of our students and what we are planning for the future. To nurture and support the mental health of our students, we currently have the following resources available across the district:
Thank you to everyone who recently shared their thoughts about Brainerd Public School District's long-range facilities planning through two recent surveys! Public input is a critical step to developing the best plan to meet student, teacher, and community needs while providing high value to local taxpayers.
Listening to our community is one of my favorite parts of being your superintendent. Your voice is important as we move forward with the task of prioritizing the needs of our school buildings and the role they play in creating opportunities for our students.
"Turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, each and every day." Since becoming your superintendent, I have become clearly aware that this is the norm at Brainerd Public Schools. I am very fortunate to work in a school district where our great communities are passionate supporters of highest quality education. Brainerd Public Schools' Blueprint 181 is investing, growing, and leading the state of Minnesota through innovation, opportunity, and success for all learners!
